Advanced composite material technologies help drive performance through lightweight construction and innovation in modern aerospace mobility
MEL Composites is collaborating with ELA Aviation, a leading manufacturer of gyrocopters, providing a range of high-performance composite materials and consumables for its latest-generation aircraft platforms. This collaboration strengthens MEL Composites' growing position in the advanced aerospace mobility market by supplying lightweight composite material technologies that help improve aircraft performance, manufacturing efficiency and structural reliability.
MEL Composites supplies ELA Aviation with PVC foam cores, 3K and 6K carbon fabrics, lightweight stitched multiaxial carbon reinforcements, and a complete package of vacuum process consumables specifically designed for resin infusion manufacturing processes.
Founded 30 years ago, ELA Aviation evolved from the experimental development of composite-material aircraft in the 1980s to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of autogyros, having delivered more than 1,000 aircraft worldwide from its manufacturing facility in Fuente Obejuna, Córdoba, Spain.
MEL's composite materials are used throughout ELA's aircraft range, including lightweight carbon structural components for fuselages, tail assemblies, fairings and trim systems. Advanced carbon composite structures contribute significantly to reducing overall weight and enhancing the flight performance of all ELA production models.
One example is the new Eclipse REVO, described as the first fully enclosed two-seat gyrocopter capable of taking off without the need for a runway. By combining an ultra-lightweight carbon fuselage with a Rotax 916iS engine, the aircraft can reportedly take off in as little as 10 metres.
As specialists in resin infusion technology, ELA Aviation has developed consistent manufacturing processes capable of producing lightweight composite structures with very tight weight tolerances. Working closely with MEL Composites, the two companies have further optimised laminate configurations and adapted vacuum consumable solutions to improve production efficiency and reduce material waste.
"We are proud to support ELA Aviation and the development of next-generation gyrocopter platforms using advanced lightweight composite technologies," says Eduardo Galofré, CEO of MEL Composites. "ELA's aircraft demonstrate how carbon composite engineering can continue to improve aerospace performance, safety and manufacturing efficiency, while offering exciting new mobility solutions for both commercial and private aviation markets. We have also recently expanded our manufacturing capabilities to offer a wider range of customised core material kits as demand for advanced composite aerospace applications continues to grow."
