MARINA DUQUE DE ALBA STRUCTURES

MEL Composites collaborated with Carbures, composite materials specialists, on an innovative solution to expand a cruise ship dock's operations. A durable, low-maintenance fiberglass construction was chosen for the massive mooring structures of the Duke of Alba, standing 13.5 m tall and 12 m in diameter. MEL supplied PET foam, epoxy resins, and fiberglass for the construction, in addition to advising on the infusion strategy.

The composite materials solution significantly reduced the time and complexity of the project's construction and installation phases. Among the advantages offered by using composites are the reduced weight of the structure, which facilitates its placement and installation, and its resistance to environmental conditions, especially corrosive ones. Furthermore, the production process and use of these materials are less harmful to the environment and allow for a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a traditional concrete-based solution.
